Give your landlord a forwarding address (in writing)

2 min · updated June 16, 2026

In several states the landlord’s deadline (or your right to a penalty) doesn’t kick in until you give a written forwarding address. Send this short notice — by itself or as part of your first demand letter — and keep proof.

Re: Forwarding address for security deposit return
    [former rental address, unit #]

Dear [Landlord name],

I moved out of [former rental address] on [move-out date]. Please send my
security deposit and any required itemized statement to my forwarding
address:

    [City, State ZIP]

Thank you,

This step is critical in some states. Texas and Ohio tie your remedies to giving a written forwarding address; Michigan requires it within 4 days of moving out or the landlord is relieved of sending the itemized notice. Arizona’s clock starts on your written demand. Confirm the rule and timing for your state in the state table — and send this promptly.

Deliver it the way your state recognizes (certified mail is safest) and keep the receipt — see how to send certified mail.
